Giuliana Sgrena and THE Question

Until now, I have stayed away from the whole Giuliana Sgrena story. As anyone who follows the news at all knows, preliminary reports of any incident often are inaccurate (to say the least!) as well as unreliable. It takes time to sort through disparate and widely divergent accounts of the same incident. Also, when there are those who have an ideological axe to grind involved, sorting fact from fiction often becomes even more difficult. In other words, consider the source. When the vast amount of preliminary information regarding Giuliana Sgrena was coming directly from the communist daily Il Manifesto, and when they were getting their information directly from their anti-war, anti-American employee, it would appear to any reasonably minded individual that the story might not be as one-sided as it was being presented.

The pseudonymous Dr. Rusty Shackleford of The Jawa Report has been on top of the story from the start and has his take on the situation here and here. It didn't take long for the leftists here in America to seize upon this and start making accusations that those on the right were making conspiracy theories against Sgrena and her captors. Yet these same leftists refuse to recognize any conspiracy theory mentality on their part as they steadfastly presume the guilt of the US military and baselessly conjecture that Sgrena was targeted for "assassination."

Enter Jeff Goldstein of Protein Wisdom, who for all his humor must not be sold short on his capacity for uncommonly good sense and a probing intelligence that can cut every bit as deep as his satire and wit. He, in my opinion, asks THE question regarding all this: Why?

Go read it and ask yourself the same question. As Goldstein himself has said, I too was not present at the scene of the Sgrena incident, and I too couldn't swear to what did or did not happen. But I can certainly exercise some discernment and logic and so can you.

Sgrena deliberately targeted for "assassination" by the US military? WHY? It doesn't make much sense, does it? Unless of course you've already taken the stance that Chimpy McHitlerburton, the US military and the US citizens themselves are all the embodiment of pure evil.
